Free gift auto-add widget

The storefront half of a Free Gift campaign: it adds the gift to the cart when the spend threshold is reached, removes it if the cart drops back, and tells the shopper what happened.

A Free Gift campaign has two halves. The discount prices the gift to free at checkout; this widget makes the promise visible by putting the gift in the cart automatically, so the shopper never has to find and add it themselves. Together they make "spend $75, get a free tote" feel effortless.

How it behaves

  • When the cart's qualifying spend crosses the threshold, the gift is added to the cart at once, and a small dismissible message tells the shopper their gift was added.
  • If the cart drops back under the threshold, the widget removes the gift it added, so a full-price gift is never silently left in the cart.
  • It only ever removes gift lines it added itself. A gift the shopper added by hand is theirs; the discount still prices it to free while the cart qualifies.
  • It gives one gift at a time. If the same gift is already in the cart, whether the widget added it or the shopper did, it never adds a second copy.
  • If the gift is out of stock, it tries the campaign's next backup gift; if none are available, it adds nothing rather than promise a gift it cannot deliver.
  • Spend is measured the same way as at checkout: gift lines never count toward their own threshold, and product targeting is honoured. Auto-add resolves campaigns scoped to the whole store or to specific products; see the limitation below for other scopes.

Swapping the gift on a tiered ladder

When a campaign has more than one spend tier (a tiered gift with purchase), the widget keeps the cart on the right tier automatically. It works out the highest tier the cart qualifies for and adds that tier's gift.

  • As the cart crosses a threshold going up, the gift swaps up: the previous tier's gift is removed and the higher tier's gift is added.
  • As the cart drops below a threshold, the gift swaps back down to the lower tier's gift.
  • Below the lowest tier, the gift is removed entirely.
  • There is only ever one free gift in the cart. The shopper gets the gift of the highest tier they reach, never all of them at once.
  • Each tier falls back to its own backups for stock, independently of the other tiers.

If the shopper deletes the gift

Deleting the auto-added gift is treated as "no thanks": the widget will not add that tier's gift back for the rest of the browsing session, so shoppers are never nagged into a gift they removed. Unlocking a HIGHER tier is a new, better offer and is added again. A gift the shopper added themselves is always theirs to keep or remove - the widget never touches it.

What it needs

  • The Stackable app embed turned on in the theme editor, with its free gift setting enabled.
  • A live Free Gift campaign.
  • The gift variant in stock.

Honest limitations

Watch out

Express checkout from a product page skips the gift

The gift is added in the cart. A shopper who taps an express checkout button straight from a product page never visits the cart, so the gift is not added for them. The gift pop-up and its floating reopen button exist partly to make the cart worth visiting.

  • Foreign-currency carts: thresholds are in your store currency, so in a different presentment currency the widget does not auto-add (the same currency fail-safe the storefront widgets use). A gift already in a qualifying cart is still priced correctly.
  • Only whole-store and product-scoped campaigns auto-add. Collection, tag, and variant scopes are skipped, because that membership cannot be resolved reliably in the storefront. The discount itself still prices a present gift to free, and checkout always prices an earned gift correctly whatever the scope.
  • Below the threshold, a gift that is still in the cart stays at full price, which is the safe default.
  • The widget adds the gift; the discount prices it to free. If a bigger product discount is live and the two campaigns are not set to combine, Shopify applies only the better deal, and the added gift is charged at full price. See the troubleshooting page "Two campaigns, only one applies".
