DocumentationTiered gift with purchase

Tiered gift with purchase: a gift ladder

Build a spend ladder where a bigger cart unlocks a better gift, for example "spend $50 for gift A, spend $100 for gift B". The shopper gets one gift, the highest they qualify for, and the storefront swaps it up or down as the cart changes.

A tiered gift with purchase is a Free Gift campaign with more than one spend tier. Each tier is a spend amount paired with its own gift: "spend $50, get gift A; spend $100, get gift B". It is the classic gift ladder used to lift average order value, because a shopper who is close to the next tier has a clear reason to add a little more.

You build it in the same place as a single-threshold Free Gift: choose the Free Gift type, set the first tier, then add higher tiers. If you only ever want one gift at one threshold, see the Free Gift page instead.

The shopper gets one gift: the highest they reach

Watch out

Not cumulative

A shopper gets exactly ONE gift, the gift of the highest tier their cart qualifies for. Reaching the $100 tier gives gift B instead of gift A, not both. Spending more never stacks up every gift in the ladder. This is the single most important thing to understand about tiered gifts.

So with "spend $50 for gift A, spend $100 for gift B": a $70 cart gets gift A; a $120 cart gets gift B only; a $40 cart gets nothing. The tier the cart clears is what decides the gift, and only the top qualifying tier counts.

Spend $50 for gift A, spend $100 for gift B

Cart of $40
No gift (below the first tier)
Cart of $70
Gift A only
Cart of $120
Gift B only (not A and B)

Building the ladder

Each tier has its own spend amount and its own gift. You add tiers with "Add a higher gift tier", and each new tier picks its gift exactly like the first one: a primary gift plus optional backups, with the same "Which variant?" behavior when a gift product has more than one variant. Tiers are shown from lowest spend to highest, whatever order you add them in.

  • Set a spend amount and a gift on each tier.
  • A higher tier can have its own primary gift and its own backups, independent of the other tiers.
  • Gifts per order applies to the whole campaign, capping how many gift units are priced to free per order.
Tip

A higher tier with no gift falls back to your first gift

If you add a higher tier but do not give it a gift of its own, that tier hands out your first tier's gift. A higher tier shows a neutral note rather than a red error when its gift is empty, precisely because falling back to the base gift is a valid choice.

Watch out

Two tiers at the same amount

If two tiers are set to the same spend amount, the builder shows a warning, because it is unclear which gift should win at that amount. Give each tier a distinct spend amount so the ladder is unambiguous.

How the gift swaps on the storefront

The storefront widget keeps the cart on the correct tier automatically. As the shopper adds items and the cart crosses a threshold, the gift swaps up to the better tier: the previous gift is removed and the higher tier's gift is added. If they remove items and the cart drops below that threshold, it swaps back down to the lower tier's gift. Below the lowest tier, the gift is removed entirely. There is only ever one free gift in the cart at a time.

  • Cross a threshold going up: the gift swaps to the higher tier's gift.
  • Drop below a threshold: the gift swaps back to the lower tier's gift.
  • Fall below the lowest tier: the gift is removed.
  • Each tier's gift uses that tier's own primary first, then its own backups if the primary is out of stock.

Showing the ladder to shoppers

A ladder only lifts order values if shoppers can see it. Two widgets surface it. The cart progress bar nudges toward the next gift with the gift's name and photo: "$20 away from the Mini Candle", then "spend $30 more to upgrade to the Tote Bag" once a tier is reached, and a celebration at the top tier. The gift ladder widget shows the whole ladder as cards - each tier's gift photo, name, spend threshold, and value - marking what is unlocked and what comes next, on the cart page, product pages, or your home page.

  • The progress bar is part of the app embed; turn on its progress setting and gift tiers join the bar automatically.
  • The gift ladder is an app block you place from the theme editor; the Widgets page has a one-click "Add to theme" link.
  • Both count the same spend the checkout counts (targeted items, minus the gift itself), so what they promise is always what checkout gives.

The same limitations as any free gift

Because the gift is added in the cart, the tiered ladder shares the Free Gift limitations: express checkout from a product page skips the cart and so skips the gift; carts paying in a foreign presentment currency do not auto-add as a fail-safe; and collection, tag, or variant scoped campaigns skip the automatic add (the discount still prices a present gift to free at checkout). See the free gift auto-add widget page for the full detail.

Watch out

A bigger discount can beat the gift

If a bigger product discount is live at the same time and the two campaigns are not set to combine, Shopify applies only the better deal, and the auto-added gift is charged at full price. Open the Stacking step on both campaigns to let them combine, or do not run them at the same time. See the troubleshooting page "Two campaigns, only one applies".
